Reduce Your
Tax Burden
Personal tax reliefs are legally recognized deductions that reduce your taxable income, thereby lowering the total amount of income tax you are required to pay. These reliefs are offered by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and are aimed at easing the tax burden on individuals based on specific personal and family circumstances.
Who is eligible?
Types of
Personal Tax Reliefs
Personal tax reliefs are granted annually and vary depending on your personal situation.
Below are common categories:
Marriage/Responsibility Relief
For taxpayers supporting a spouse or children.
Child Education Relief
For parents paying school fees.
Aged Dependant Relief
For taxpayers supporting elderly dependants.
Disability Relief
For persons with disabilities.
Training/Professional Development Relief
For costs related to acquiring new skills or qualifications.
Old Age Relief
For individuals aged 60 and above.
When and
How to Apply
To maximize your chances of approval, you are encouraged to file your application between January 1st and October 31st of the current tax year. Applications submitted after this period may not be processed in time before the tax year closes.
Processing Time: The filing and approval of personal tax reliefs typically take up to six (6) weeks after submission to the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Can You File
for Past Years?
Unfortunately, personal tax reliefs cannot be claimed retroactively. Applications are only valid for the current tax year. For example, in 2018, reliefs were only applicable to that year. Once a tax year ends, unclaimed reliefs are written off.
Key Reminders
Personal tax reliefs are not automatic—you must apply to receive them.
Only current year applications are accepted.
Supporting documentation may be required during the approval process.
